While there is no doubt that #20 had a hard life, the lead truck and lateral being two glowing examples, we are finding much of the components that are critical to performance and to some extent safety, are in pretty good shape. It is obvious that the RGS shops had the expertise if not the resources, to maintain a pretty high level of performance from completely worn out equipment.
I believe I may have said in an earlier post that those guys knew the shortcuts they could and couldn't take. Lessons today's steam mechanics would do well to learn.
