Rich,
I used to drive a school bus to and from Boulder and Wallstreet (and sometimes to Sunset). I have driven by car from Sunset to Mont Alto (a little scary in spots) and Gold Hill, and I did some damage to a car I used to own navagating the rocks driving from Sunset to Tungsten and on out to the Peak-to-Peak Highway. What a spectacular railroad the C&N was was! Tried to interest certain parties in rebuilding from Sunset to Mont Alto, but, alas, nothing came of it. In the meantime civilization continues to encroach on the railroad
PS. When the water in Barker Reservoir is low, you can walk much of the right of way across the reservoir basin from Nederland down the extension of the C&N to supply the construction of Barker Dam, and if you know where to look, you can find the small yard where construction materials were stored. At least two 0-4-0 n.g. dinkies worked the actual construction project. If you look carefully at the first DPL image below, you will see (carely) one of the dinkies standing next to a string of mucking cars. In the second image you can see the above-referenced right-of-way in the reservoir basin. On of the dinkies can been seen, detected by its smoke, working the upper level of the dam. I ahvent' found a clear iamge of the dinkies, and I do not know what became of them.
Best little railroad by a dam site!
Mike
