Prior to about 1865 frieght cars were not long enough to require truss rods. One of the claimed advantages of broad gauge railroads (like the 6 foot wide Erie) was that the cars could carry greater loads (in the wider cars) without requiring additional length and truss rods. I suggest referring to John White's American Freight Cars which has many examples of cars broad, standard and narrow gaufes without and with truss rods.
