There is a chance that truss rods were not used on short cars, but some longitudinal roads were necessary to hold the cars together. Commonly the end beams were mortised into the longitudinal wooden beams and the truss rods held them tight. So, they not only kept the car from sagging in the middle, but also kept it all together.

Here is some of our work last winter constructing a new oak end beam for our 120 year old coach.
