The storied derailment and wandering train is said to have occurred out around Hay Ranch on the east approach to Trout Creek Pass in a blinding snowstorm. If memory serves, it was an eastbound train and got WAY off the ROW before being discovered. The 1/4 mile comment above sounds like what I remember. That's only 1300 ft., so I guess it is *possible* (?)
Next they're gonna tell us they just put it in reverse and got back on the line !
Can anyone tell me the publication that has the story of the SP train trapped in Gunnison that cleared the snowbound D&RG back to Salida (freeing some 11? trapped trains). I recall the story closed by saying the crew that left for Gunnison that day was 40 days on the road before they rolled back into Como again. I thought it was in Poor's book, and he does mention it, but not in the detail I remember reading elsewhere. Anyone ?
