Many wood-fueled railroads used "locomotive cords" as their unit of measure, which is 4 feet by 8 feet by 2 feet (or half the volume of a regular cord). Period sources seldom indicate which. I don't know whether the Sumpter Valley used this smaller value or a full cord.
What kind of wood did the SV burn for the most part? A cord of Madrone will provide a lot more BTUs than a cord of Ponderosa Pine.
