Actually during this time they still did a fair amount of doubleheading.
We were there in July 1981(about a year earlier), and there were only two trains a day, and they were using all three of the K28's as the first train was usually doubleheaded.
You are correct though, that today, most trains are only one engine, and when a second one is used it might only be for Hermosa-Rockwood up the hill.
I vaguely remember the gons from the 2-3 day trips that Russ mentions, but then I was pretty young in the 1950's and 1960's. I am sure if they were on the train I probably rode in one for a bit. I mainly remember riding in the coaches with the family and the baggage car where the concessions were. My dad rode a trip in 1954 where they had a caboose behind the engine all the way. He rode in the cupola quite a bit of that trip...A great place to ride, right behind the engine!!! Doesn't look the best for photos, but when you are riding who cares!!
