Hi Chris et al -
That An open gon was a regular feature on all of the three-day excursions that I rode in
the early sixties.
* Unlike today, when my feet and back get sore when I'm upright for
long periods, I rode most of these 500-mile trips standing in the gon - which IIRC was
always the last car of the train and open to all. I don't know whether it was attached to
the rear of the regular Silverton trains in those days, but it may have been. IIRC it was
only after these cars were desecrated by the addition of roofs and benches that specific
seats were assigned and - unlike on the C&TS - they were no longer open to everyone on
a first-come, first-served basis.
