To back up Bret's story, that is what I believe as well. In the early spring, just after the snow goes off, you can see faint traces of this line about 200' West of Hudspeth Lane. After you reach National Forest Land the grade is more evident. This is the area where I found the piece of rail way beyond any evidence of a grade. As I recall it seemed rather heavy for a really early line.
Stoddard owned a mill at Sumpter for a while, but I don't know of any logging lies connected with it. The Sumpter Valley did have a spur to this mill and could have delivered logs as well as hauling lumber.
