Stoddard had what maps call a tram line in that area very early on. I have a copy of an early map showing this courtesy of George Cook. I don't know where the mill was, but assumed that photo showed the first mill which I thought was at the bottom of Clear Crk. I may be wrong. When we speak of Stoddards it gets very confusing as David Eccles father in law John Stoddard participated in some lumber ventures with Eccles and apparently did some on his own. His sons of which there were a lot owned mills in various combinations of siblings. They held ownership stakes in some of the other operations around N.E. Ore. such as Grande Ronde Lbr. and Nibley Mimnaugh. This is a subject as to which Stoddard was which I would like to delve into a bit more. Later on in the 1930's AC Lighthall the man who was selected to make or keep the Oregon Lumber Co. solvent actually purchased Stoddard Lbr.
