Mud Tunnel didn't have much drainage problems, but water would seep from the roof of Rock Tunnel and have to be broken out in the spring. In the early 80's considerable work was done to mud tunnel. New mudsills were placed the entire length, lining timbers replaced, several verticle sets replaced and I believe new portals were built at both ends. I recall a minor cave in at the west end after the '81 season. I was firing a movie shoot over in Antonito. The mess was cleaned up and When we came west with the train. We stopped to look at it. One or two verticle sets had collapsed just inside the west portal leaving the portal unattached to the rest of the mountain. It was real spooky looking. the consensus was to get out of there before the whole thing came down. I recall the next spring trains did not run out of Antonito for the first couple of weeks of the season while repairs were being completed.
