Dutch,
Great memories of the first time I met your Uncle.
Bill Colley, Bruce Anderson, Earl, and scores more of us NG fans boarded the last DRGW Silverton on
Oct.5 1980. Jim Mayer (first DSNG Supt.) and Charles Bradshaw and Co.were all there for the day. I believe we had the 476 (your Uncle's favorite K-28.) Fireman was Perry Garcia (now UP
Road Foreman in Wyoming) and trainmen Harley Gilliland, Eddie Shawcroft, and another whose name escapes me. Next day the 473 with a work train for Hermosa Hill left town. As I recall, they turned on the wye at Rockwood, backed down the highline for awhile, then returned to Dgo. Perry said the flues were leaking bad and gave them one heck of a time keeping the fire going down the hill. We watched as Carl backed the '3 to the ashpit and the last DRGW fire was dropped. Garcia
set a few torpedoes down behind the tender to help
your Uncle stay alert for the trip to the turntable. Other than that, it was an uneventful
moment to watch the end of an era, as another was about to unfold.
Please give my regards to Carl. Hope to see you all soon again.
