I don't remember seeing any photos of her in Southern green, only black, but I do vaguely (mis?)remember some pin-striping on the tender.

They weren't much shorter than the 1218's - #610's drivers were 63" and the A's were 67", IIRC. But #610 was probably due for a major boiler overhaul (this was back before the rules were changed), which the Southern didn't want to pay for.

I'm not sure what you mean by stokers - #610 was an oil burner - but she did have thermic siphons in the firebox, which enhanced water circulation in the boiler so she steamed really well.

p.s. IMHO, #610 would be an ideal engine for the Grand Canyon Railway. She could pull a good-sized train up the hill from Williams to the canyon at a reasonable speed - just like the ATSF 2-10-2's that were used from time to time in place of the 4-8-2's and 4-8-4's that brought the Limited to Williams from Chicago or L.A.
