Just to add to the goodness of how sometimes good stuff happens, 'working near the 053 i noticed the slot in the sliding door on the (currently) east side. Sure enough, the mail slot is still there, not filled or boarded up, where folks would come up and "mail a letter on the train". A Friend/Volunteer Bob Ground related that as a kid growing up in Tres Piedras, south of Antonito, he would see 053 come through in the little mixed train on the Chili Line, and might even have mailed a letter or card himself.
Always nice to know that there is that 'link' to the past,,, from the days of the Chili Line, (what I consider one of the most beautiful lines), to now, when the C&TS is reviving in this, its 30th year.
Remember to come and visit this year. Tickets are the lifeblood for the railroad, and plan to spend two or three days in town, so that you can savor the atmosphere of the small division point, visit the rr shops, and stroll about the town. Gotta keep the town alive, as the town and the RR line are '''symbiotic" ..needing each to survive in best possible form...
