Lex:
As you surmised the coaches under wraps are original D&RG(W) "varnish". Presently, there are five cars under wraps. I've listed them below with some information about each:
054 RPO (ex San Juan?), more recently used as outfit car
065 RPO (ex San Juan?), more recently used as outfit care
0252 Tourist Sleeper, more recently used as kitchen car for B&B crew
0292 Coach
0452 Paycar F
In addition to 054 & 065, there is another ex-RPO (053). The Friends have been working on it the past few summers, so it's not currently covered. I believe that it was used as an RPO on the Chili Line. More recently, it was used a a kitchen car on snow plow trains.
Cars nos. 053, 054, 065 & 0452 were amoung the equipment purchased by the States in 1970. Cars nos. 0252 and 0292 were purchased by the Friends. The intent is to donate them to the Commission. The Friends put the wraps on the cars several years ago to prevent further deterioration.
Hope this helps.
