Kevin,
Back in the eraly years, the Gazette ran a series of articles entitled "Straight Talk About Bent Pipes". It does just what you requested, it explains what the pipes are and what they do.
Althought the pipes on a locomotive look like they're spaghetti thrown against a boiler, they each have a purpose and are necessary for the locomotive's operation.
