Kevin,
What you need is a Locomotive Cylopedia! They'll have all the information you're looking for. They'll cover the types of pumps, the air strainers, fittings, governors, piping practices, the whole nine yards.
The tricky part is finding one you can borrow. First chesk with friends and family, then move onto any close by railroad museums, maybe even the local library.
Definatly look to borrow first, rather than look to buy, as the reprints for these things are not cheap and the originals are worth more $$ than your liver, or my brain, take your pick. <img class=" />
If that fails then drop me an e-mail and I'll make xeroxs out of one of mine. I have reprints of the 1883/1886, 1906 and the 1940 editions. Between the information in one of thoes books and photographs of your favorite prototypes, a visit to a museum or two, and you'll beable to figure everything out rather well.
Other printed matrial to look for would be some Westinghouse manuals or sales broshures. These I don't have.
Cheers,
Curtis F.
