I read an ICC accident report for a head-on wreck on the Santa Fe at Stockton, CA, during the 'teens. It was a cold raining day, the passenger train was running late and lost its authority to run at passenger speeds within yard limits. Since the passenger was late, a switch crew was working a siding within the yard limits and noticed this fast train bearing down on them and tried to get out of the way onto the siding with no success.
The passenger train engine crew died in the wreck -- it was figured that they had closed up the windows, etc. and had fallen asleep in the warm cab.
