Seeing where you're going can be over-rated. There's a tale in the Cafky book on the CM, told by an engineer, of how he kept time up Ute Pass on passenger trains with one of the 200's (V. compounds) back when they were new. Since he couldn't see the track thru the steam leaks, he'd get down on the deck and help the fireman shovel. Kept her nice and hot.
