Richard Connor helped build the line when the Rio Grande expanded to Durango. He later became section foreman at Hermosa. His sons Jim, John and Steve were engineers.
James R. Connor was engineer on the last westbound San Juna from Chama to Durango on the 478. John P. Connor was hired on 10-5-1917 and was later killed on a rollover on the Silverton Branch. Steve Connor ran the last Rio Grande passenger train over Cumbres Pass with the National Park Service Special on Nov. 24, 1968. He was also the movie star of the family, getting held up be Robert Redford in ``Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.''
Steve's son George was a brakman/conductor and grandson Paul still works for the railroad, as last I heard, for the Union Pacific in Grand Junction.
There is another Richard Connor, who fits into the family somewhere.
