Thanks, Mr. Kelsey. That sheds a bit of light on why the 40 met its demise when it did. Considering that there was a fatality from this wreck, and the fact that the #40 suffered fatal damage as well, I'm a little surpised that this event hasn't found its way into some of the more popular works on the RGS. There are many RGS books I don't have, yet, so maybe the wreck is recorded in one of those. I don't remember any reference to it in "Silver San Juan". As I recall, the #455 ran away decending Dallas Divide just a few months later - it must have been a bad year for the RGS.
