Chris,
The first span has been loose and ready to be pulled for about two weeks. I think Reiman decided to do some prep work first, rather than risking buying a new bridge.
I was told this morning that the planned removal sequence has stayed the same for at least two weeks (and has already been posted elsewhere on this forum) -
1. The first two spans will be removed by the Link-Belt, starting at the abutment section.
2. Span two will be set into place first, using the Link-Belt.
3. Span one will then be placed, also by the Link-Belt. The reason given to me was that tolerances dictate this sequence.
4. The remaining sections will then be removed and replaced, one at a time, in sequential order, using the A-Frames.
The gantry rails needed to be all installed before the spans could be removed, as it became obvious, when the first two sections were disconnected from each other and the second section popped up an inch, that there were hidden stresses to be dealt with. I don't there is an engineer alive willing to predict exactly where things will go as further span joinings are opened. Hence the desire for more horizontal rigidity.
