I think some info coming out of the Rutland Railroad modelers might lend a hand, as there is similar info in their paint charts as in the D&RGW chart so wonderfully printed in an earlier thread.
The Rutlnad used aluminum paint on trim. That's been well known, amd has casued many a modeler to use a silver color, but apparently aluminum paint from the old days was a name describing the actual paint more than the color, which appeared white. We are now trying to find if the tender lettering, seen as s ilver in some photos and on all decal sheets, was acutally white "aluminum" paint at one time.
Aluminum paint was not, as far as I can tell, anything like "front end paint" which was applied to un-jacketed surfaces that had to withstand great heat and thus needed a different chemical make up. Smokeboxes and fireboxes are examples of this.
So, it sounds like the D&RGW did just what the Rutland did. Aluminum trim (appearing white) and then another grayish shade for the heat-exposed metals.
