I certainly agree with the majority view that "south" is best. But, there's a lot to look at on the north side of the train as well. Looking uphill doesn't compare with your first look down into the gorge, but without the gorge, it'd be a great view on it's own. It just fails to measure up to the gorge; after lots of trips, looking uphill and avoiding the crush of people looking down always brings something interesting to mind.
Of course, when I need to justify myself to others who wonder why I'm looking "away" from the view, I just tell them I've been designated as uphill ballast so we don't flip over.
Seriously though, most of the best animal sighting's I've made have been uphill, and there's no crowd either.
