Yes that's the wreck that killed Paul Mayer, Jim's brother. The guys in Alamosa still talk about that one. Paul was well liked amoung the guys.
The accident happened around Sept 26, 1958 up at Grandview coming off Bocea Hill where the track comes back close to the highway. The track kicked out into a sharp kink on a curve on a fill. 483 was leading 494. 483 hit the kink and got shoved over by 494. Bill Holt was running the 483, Bob Shock was running 494. It was a terrible tragedy. Paul never had a chance.
