Russ: Thanks for your response to my comment about the fuel for #844. You prompted me to dig into my files, and I found a recent UPRR flier that says #3985 Challenger originally burned coal but was converted in 1990 to burn #5 fuel oil. But I can find nothing about #844 originally burning coal. So obviously I got the two beasts confused, and I thank you for correctly un-confusing my foggy memory chips. And thanks again for posting those great photos from your 1960 trip.
Incidentally, I live in Kearney, Nebraska, on the UP main line, and am privileged to see these magnificent engines when they come through on their eastward tours from Cheyenne.
