Re: rail size for the Maine two-footers

January 06, 2011 09:16AM
Most of the Maine two footers started with 30 or 33lb rail. When the larger locomotives were put in service the longer railroads like the SR&RL and WW&F upgraded parts of their lines to 56 and 60lb rail. The WW&F and Sandy River each had 2-6-2s, the heaviest was SR&RL #23 which tipped the scales at 54,000 lbs. (Weight including loaded tender was about 100,000 lbs.)
