Interesting discussion. While I knew they had pumps for the water tanks I never gave it much thought as to manning the pumps. So here are a couple of questions.
(1) How many tenders could be filled with a full water tank, from say a tank like Los Pinos, Cresco, Gato, etc.
(2) I assume there were guys stationed(as outlined by posters above) during the heyday of lots of trains and cheap labor. But what about in the later days of operations such as the 60's on the 4th Division. How would they take care of tanks that were remote. Send guys out in speeders, highway vehicles and walk(Lava for instance, or Navajo).'
(3) So given you had 6 trains a day that needed to use a tank, how often would you have to pump water to keep it full.
(4) Jerry mentioned a rotary run where there was no water in a tank. How often did this situation occur on say the 4th Division?
