George, the bodys of the C&S cabooses were rebuilt/rebuilt from old DSP&P Waycars, which had only two axles, supported by journal pedestals mounted under and inside, the corners of the body. The C&S never changed from the original concept of the two axles. On the longer bodied cabooses, like #1009, the axles were placed even further inside the corners. All of them seem to have had almost identical spacing between the axles. #1006 at Silver Plume is a short body caboose, and so is #1008. #1006's still undisturbed journal pedestals are set on center at 24" inside the corners of the body. So the body was supported 24" inside the corners, not at the end of the beams outside the body, and there were no dropped truss rods. There probably were trusses not visible under the body, but those may have been stripped.
#1008 is almost identical to #1006 with the exception of the style of the side windows, and that the "B" ends are reversed. There is only a single brake wheel on these cabooses, on #1006 it is on the end away from the cupola, #1008's was on the cupola end. #1008 also has rounded corners on the body (thanks to Rob Smith).
I was mistaken last evening when I stated that #1008 was a long body caboose, I was thinking of #1003.
