In another thread I jokingly suggested that we rename the line Dalton & Rio Grande Western to coincide with the prior initials and flying Rio Grande. I looked up Dalton in "The Historic Preservation Study" and it lists the location at MP 338.9 about 1 mile east of Lobato. After contemplating that for a while, I thought that can't be right. I always thought that the short spur east of Lobato was Broad Spur. So I dug up the val. maps and it is labeled as Broad. So then I pulled out a copy of "Ticket to Toltec" and it indicates that the early name was Broad, for the lumberman Frank W. Broad, and it was later known as Dalton Station.
The preservation study states that Broad's was at MP 343.00 which is right around the first highway crossing out of Chama. Is the preservation study correct? Did Broad have a second later spur closer to Chama once the area around Lobato was logged out? Who was Dalton named after? Ticket to Toltec doesn't mention any spur around MP 343 and the val. map doesn't provide any clues.
Time for some further research.
