Correction Ed,
All of the C&S's rebuilt 2-6-0's were converted to oil either when or shortly after they were rebuilt by the C&S shops in Denver. It is reported that C&S 4 emerged from the shops as an oil burner.
This conversion did not last long as Oil burning was the preferred fuel of the Superintendent of Motive Power at that time. He was an ex-SP man... go figure. The time span was a mere two years.
The 2-6-0's were converted back to coal when the C&S lost the contract with the Boulder (Colo) oil fields to supply fuel for the locomotives.
This is a little known facet of C&S ng History, but the Newspaper Reports of the conversions as well as the fulfilled AFE's (Authorization For Expenditure) still exist. There has been one unpublished photo found that shows a C&S 2-6-0 as an oil burner. The time period for the photo is correct with the historical record.
