As all of you who were lucky and/or wise enough to attend the C&TS 40th Anniversary Celebration on
August 27-30 are probably aware, Ed Stabler - a 1970 volunteer himself - provided us with some superb
entertainment at Cumbres Pass on Friday evening and in Chama (in spite of the rain) on Monday. Ed's
latest CD - 'Wind in the Wire' - was up to #16 on the INTERNATIONAL music charts last summer for the
'Cowboy' (NOT 'Country-Western') genre, and he has promised a CD of railroad songs for us in the near
future.
Be sure to check out Ed's bio and samples of his music at [www.myspace.com]
In hopes that we "Wild-Eyed Foamers" can at last be celebrated in music, I have revised 'The Ballad of Festus Frothjaw' (aka 'The Foamite Song') into a more generic version suitable for all areas of our beloved U.S.A.:
Question: "
What exactly IS a 'Foamer'" [aka
'Foamite']
?
Answer: See the following
-
'The Ballad of Festus Frothjaw'
aka 'The Foamite Song'
(To the tune of Wreck of the Old 97 / Charlie and the M.T.A.)
Well, a Foamite is a feller ... What leans from the winn-der
Of his car ... with a cam-ra in each hand
Takin' hunnerds o' pitchurs (that all look the same)
As he chases choo-choo trains across the land
[Chorus (optional)]:
Well did he ever retahrn? No, he never retahrned
And his fate is still unlahrned [[i]BASS: Poor Ol' Festus[/i]]*
He's gonna rot for-ever in the Basement of the Pokey
He's the Foam-er who nev-er retahrned
Them Foamers, they flock to their faye - vrit locations
All across the Yoo ... Ess ... Aye - EEEE
When the Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern or Milwaukee
Sends one o' their fine steamers that-a-way
[Chorus (optional) and/or Banjo Solo]
Ol' Festus J. Froth - jaw come a-Foamin' down the highway
But them Smokies ... wuz thick ... as ... fleas ...
They smashed BOTH his cam - ras, and tossed him in the pokey
When they caught him a-STEERIN' with his KNEES!
[Chorus (optional)]
So La-A-dies, if yer man is a Foamer
With miles ... of ... film Gig ... Uh ... Bites ... to ... burn
Don't let him drahve a-loan when he's out thar chasin' choo-choos
He'll get bus-ted, and nev-er retahrn.
