Hi,
I like George's Pecos River bridge. This is the best way for a 1/2 mile long bridge.
However, that is not the only way. I do not know how the D&RG built Lobato.
With the curve from Cumbres entering the bridge from the east, I doubt this construction method would have been used.
Many people do not realize that engineers not only have to design a structure to stand up in its complete condition but also at intermediate stages of construction so that it will not collapse from wind or other items while being built.
I have seen many photos of bridges (stone and iron and steel) being built with wood falsework supporting the incomplete structure. Falsework is basically a wood scaffolding that supports the incomplete bridge while it is assembled and is removed when the bridge is complete.
Lobato MIGHT have been built this way.
FYI.
