On the subject of gauge

Ed Alexander, in the historical overview chapter of his Civil War Railroads and Models, states that while there was yet no "standard gauge" the northern railroads were standardizing on 4' 8-1/2" but several lines were still using 5' gauge. In the south, there was some 4' 8-1/2" close to the Mason/Dixon Line, but the deep south was 5' or even 66" gauge. So, does that mean that 4' 8-1/2" was actually narrow gauge? smiling smiley
