Ed Alexander, in the historical overview chapter of his Civil War Railroads and Models, states that while there was yet no "standard gauge" the northern railroads were standardizing on 4' 8-1/2" but several lines were still using 5' gauge. In the south, there was some 4' 8-1/2" close to the Mason/Dixon Line, but the deep south was 5' or even 66" gauge. So, does that mean that 4' 8-1/2" was actually narrow gauge?
