Also rode the Creede branch Friday before Railfest, from South Fork to the Rio Grande river crossing west of Wagon Wheel Gap. This is a delightful trip. Your riding in a spiker that has been converted to a crew carrier. It's got a top, windshield, and roll down plastic curtains. In case of inclement weather your warm and dry. Seating is comfortable and Don Shank is a gracious and entertaining host. (he drives too) He is well versed on the history of the branch. This branch has not seen a train in over 15 years, and I doubt if many people have ever ridden it. You'll see scenery that you haven't seen before. We spotted deer and a bear that afternoon. Restroom facilities are availible and you get to stop at the campground/cabins at Wagon Wheel Gap for pop and ice cream. Morning run takes you to the Wasson wye (end of line) and the P.M. run goes to the river west of the Gap. This is an affordable trip and takes about 3 hours. I highly reccomend it. Much to Don's dismay, I named the "motor car" the Wasson Wobbler.
