I don't know for certain, but I doubt if the ng ever ground rail; it's a fairly new technology. However, since rail is probably the most expensive item on the right of way, rr's tend to use it until it's used up. For example, once it's too worn, they will "cascade" it from the mainline, to a passing track, then to the yard, then to an industry track until it's completely used up. They may have standards which tell how much wear is allowed for each type of usage. It may be around a long time! As an aside, I recently found some 1881 English 62 1/2 lb. rail on an industry lead here in Sacramento. Interesting stuff. Ned
