“All Clear” Signal Given on Rio Grande After Use of Rotary
A brief synopsis for January 1943
Definitely no 100 car trains into Gunnison during January 1943.
The trouble on Crested Butte branch started January 22 when engine 498 derailed on the wye at Crested Butte. Assistance was required and engine 495 sent from Gunnison. Crew for 498 off duty until 495 arrived. 498 eventually rerailed and arrived back in Gunnison late morning January 23.
Engine 495 took over the freight duties and on the way back to Gunnison got snowed in at west end of Slate Cut, also morning of January 23. Waited for rotary to arrive.
January 24 engine 498 and rotary OO left Gunnison to dig out engine 495. Rotary train and 495 returned to Gunnison.
January 25 engines 495 and 456 take rotary to Crested Butte, Engine 456 brought loads back to Gunnison and engine 495 returned with rotary.
January 26 again engines 495 and 456 take rotary to Crested Butte. Engine 495 derailed and left at Crested Butte while engine 456 brought rotary back to Gunnison.
January 27, engine 480 take tool cars to Gunnison for engine 495. Engine 495 rerailed and run light to Gunnison, engine 480 and tool cars return to Gunnison.
January 27, engines 278 and 268 run plow and flanger train on Baldwin branch.
January 28 Crested Butte branch and Baldwin branch operations return to “normal”.
