Hi, All -
I too hope it was just a gust of wind - which would certainly account for at least one
of the heralds being lost on the westbound trip, as the combined speed of the engine
heading west and the wind blowing east could easily have exceeded 40 mph. What is
confusing is that engineer Tracy Caraway said he is quite sure that both heralds were
on the engine when it arrived at Cumbres on the evening of 08/30
...
I have arranged with Design-a-Sign in P.S. to create new heralds from press-on vinyl, similar to the lettering. I'll delay production of these replacements for a couple of days in hopes that the second magnetic one will be found soon. When re-applied, the magnetic heralds should be heated - perhaps with a hair dryer - and pressed down more closely around the rivets to minimize the gap that probably allowed at least one of them to be removed by Aeolis; a light coating of spray-on glue such as that used for mounting photos would also help. (The top of the shaft of the double-headed arrow should align with the bottoms of the rivets.) The originals were magnetic as I assumed they would be used only for the remainder of this season and then replaced with a design much closer to the C&TS heralds of the late eighties.

p.s. Who found the first herald? Please let me know so that I can send him or her a $100 reward for finding it. The finder of the second one will get $150, since both are needed to avoid the hassle of making the replacements.
