Back in '62 the D&RGW was still going fairly strong, with several freights each week
between Alamosa and Farmington, and regular shipments of "Gramps" oil from Chama
to Alamosa.  There were only a few "hard core" foamers in those days, as things were
relatively 'ho-hum' compared to the photo freights of today, and not too many fans were
willing to brave the rough dirt road that is now highway 17.

Not even Tom Gildersleeve and John West were there every year.  IIRC Dick Steinheimer visited only once or twice, and Ernie Robart did not begin his major effort to record the last few years until after the oil shipments had ended in late 1964. It was only by sheer luck that I was on hand - with only about half a dozen others - to photograph the last revenue freights over Cumbres in August, 1968.
