Hi, Martyn -
As much as John, Roger and I poke fun at each other (see [
ngdiscussion.net] and [
ngdiscussion.net])
there is one thing that I'm pretty sure we all agree on
: the best way to enjoy the C&TS is to stay over-
night in Chama,
* ride the morning bus to Antonito - which is a fun trip in its own right, especially in the
morning - and ride the train westbound all the way from Antonito to Chama. As John and Greg noted
above, this way the enjoyment builds gradually all day instead of a big burst of excitement and then a
slow letdown, and is even more important if you have only one day to ride, and will not be returning for
quite a while.

* As noted on another thread, I recommend staying at The Hotel & Shops - it's a nicely refurbished 1930's hotel, directly across the street from the depot - phone 575/756-2416. Barbara Hogan is a very gracious hostess, and her husband Roger - if you can catch him when he's not out stalking bear, birds, deer, elk and foxes - is the official photographer for the C&TS and can help you find some of those special places to take photos. For additional advice on where to stay in Chama, see the "Where to Stay" thread starting at [
ngdiscussion.net].
