Richard; The USSteel handbook shows 30' for rail
60# per yard and less, Rail over 60# was in 33'or
39'. The mills reserved the right to furnish up to 10% 0f the 33' in short lengths varying in even feet down to 25'. The 39' was furnished with up to 11% short lengths varying in even feet down to 25'.
Under 60# rail was furnished with 10% short lengths varying in even feet down to 20'.
The 12# rail I bought for "Toot" was in 30'
lengths.
Some of the old timers can tell you what weight
rail was used on the NG. I saw some pretty light rail out there and some of it could be 60# or under.
