One of my favorite episodes featuring cops and railfans.....
A few years ago, some friends and I were chasing challenger 3985 east out of Baker City Oregon. A few miles east of town where Hwy 30 parallels the track there is a good photo location to catch trains topping out on Encina Hill. Several dozen foamer vehicles all arrived at about the same time, parking all over the narrow winding road with it's non-existant shoulders and generally impeding traffic. Just as we were setting up to get our shots, a state patrolman came slaloming through the parked cars, skidded to a stop at the head of the line, parked crookedly and lunged out of his cruiser. Thinks I, "uh-oh, this guy's gonna kick butt & take names"... he had a week's quota of tickets waiting there.
The trooper grabbed his evidence camera and went sprinting down to trackside, shooting pictures like mad as 3985 blew by. Jumped back in his car and sped off. We didn't see him again all day. Guess it goes to show that even Smokey can be a foamer!
