My advise after chasing many a mainline trip in my previous life,
was the following:
(1) Know your route...scout out the line for locations you REALLY want.
(2) Plan alternate routes for getting around the crowd of chasers when
things bottle up(if thats possible).
(3) 844 - small train is childs-play for this engine. To get good shots you will have to either get start ups from overnight stops, or service stops, or find a decent grade where they may have to work the throttle to make her talk and or smoke a little. The colder the weather the better!
(4) On some shots try to get sun directly on the nose, otherwise the smoke defectors will shadow the front much of the time.
(5) When I chased 8444 1200 miles from Portland, Oregon to Cheyenne, WY in 1989, I figured we went approximately 50 miles between shots on average. So make your spots count, there are no do-overs!!
Good luck.
