It still seems odd, because part of the reason the locomotives were still in Skagway was that the cost of transportating them to Seattle exceeded their scrap value. I don't know what scrap prices were at the time, but I do know that our cost, in 1977, of getting the 19 and 20 (81,80) to seattle was $26,000. For perspective, at that time you could get a brand new 4WD pickup for $6500.

As far as being destroyed, both our 19 and 20 survived a roundhouse fire along with a number of other Sumpter Valley locomotives. Some of them had their cabs burned off, but they were rebuilt. Photos show the part of the roundhouse around the 19 and 20 was completely gone.
