I have been poking through some of my old pix and can't figure out how engines could runaround cars on the east (Chama) end of Durango yard after the loop was built in 1968. The original double ended yard tracks were all severed at the west (Silverton) end. When a train came in from Chama or Farmington it could leave its cars on the mainline and get to the roundhouse via the diamond, but then how could an engine get to the east end of the cars to switch them. I assume Weideman's was still active and I seem to remember they were switched from the east. I'm guessing there was a crossover somewhere on the east end of the yard, but never noticed it. If not, there are various "work arounds" for this problem, including shoving the few cars involved in from Carbon Junction or putting in a new crossover. Not many trains ran in 1968, but I'm wondering how those that did were handled. Does anyone know the answer, or have a track diagram for the Durango yard?
