In my collection of printing artifacts is the original steel die used by the C&S for their stationery and probably business cards. The image is hand engraved in steel, in reverse, so that the printed image would be right reading. Ink was applied over the entire surface of the die, then a die wipe of paper was run over the surface removing all the ink except what was left in the engraved recesses, then this was pressed under pretty heavy pressure into the paper or card stock. The pressure of the press actually forces the paper into all the recesses and that transfers the ink, and that gives engraved work its raised feeling. This die can still be used on any press still being used to produce engraved stationery. I spotted it in a lot of dies offered on ebay.
