The long thread from several years ago that just showed up -- it started with ng articulated locomotives and ended up talking about 4-8-2 locomotives -- got my mind going.
Going around in my head is that I was once told that the Rio Grande had proposals for 2-8-4 narrow gauge locomotives. The next part of the story was that the turntables at several of the narrow gauge terminals were too short to handle the length of these locomotives.and would have to be replaced. That was a significant cost and caused the rejection of the proposals.
As I say, a story that I was told. I might have mis-remembered the wheel arrangement (4-8-2 v 2-8-4).
Were there also proposals for ng 2-8-4 locomotives for the Rio Grande?
