He was told in advance not to land there, but his buddy Alan Paulson at American Jet was letting him use a corner of a hanger to do the mods for the altitude attempt. When the tower tried to wave him off, he said he was out of fuel.

Bob Gilliland who was the chief test pilot for the SR71 took me over there and let me sit in the cockpit. Rats! No camera! After he trucked it out, one of the mains got stuck 1/2 way up and Darryl had to punch out.
