ChasM
Had 490 been under repair at Alamosa between end January and start March and was the trip to Chama by way of a test trip?
Usually the train sheets indicate if a run is a "break in" run. And usually it is as a light engine, possibly with shop personnel along to observe. For the date of March 9 1945 "break in" is not shown. It appears there was a power shortage at Alamosa and the 490 was used to fill the gap. I guess it is possible to say that the run could have been a break in and emergency use both.
On a recent posting engine 464 came out of the shop on a west bound freight, Alamosa to Chama, and then ran light Chama to Durango.
