Josh,
At this time the 490's were based out of Salida for use on Marshall Pass to move all that coal out of Crested Butte--at this time the Marshall Pass line had heveier volume and since the 490's could pull more up the pass than the 36's they were based in Salida. As the volume shifted in the early 50's down to San Juan extention the 37's were swapped with the 36's and then dominated the Alamosa to Durango line for the better part of the early 50's. However, by 1956 all the 36's had been moved down to Alamosa. The 490 was probably sent out on a test trip after being serviced in Alamosa, this was done prior to it going back to Salida. Hope this helps answer you question.
